Destinations
From the deepest seas to the highest mountains you have come to the most versatile vacation destination. Greece is a mixture of mountains and sea. As it is logical the location interest is divided into islands, mountains and main cities.
The islands are the main characteristic of Greece’s morphology and an integral part of the country’s culture and tradition. The sailing areas that surround the Greek islands are mainly divided into the Cyclades (often windy), Ionian (calm & green), Dodecanese and Sporades areas (with moderate winds), Saronic & Argolic Gulf (sheltered). It is true that each are differs from each other and it is proven that there are differentiations between eastern and western areas as well as northern to southern. The sea is truly amazing and is by far the best location for yachtsmen and adventurers that want to feel the so called real nature.Very popular are the islands of Mykonos and Santorini for which we have dedicated a separate section in order to go into more detail. However there are many islands like those which are the same and maybe more beautiful that someone should really try to explore. Ideal for visiting all the islands is to charter a boat in order to be able to visit all of these places you could not reach from the land.
On the other hand there are also the mountains which are are a continuation of the mountain range of the Balkans, with in turn are a continuation of the Alpine range. The two greatest ranges in Greece are the Pindos and the Rodopi. The Pindos range divides Greece vertically from east to west whereas the Rodopi range starts at the borders of Bulgaria and extends to the N.E part of Greece, The mountains of Pindos were the site of many battles during the Second Word War (1940-41) as well as during the Greek Civil War 1947-1949. The highest mountain of Greece is Mount Olympus with its highest pick Throne of Zeus 2,919 meters on the slope of Myticas belongs to the highest European mountains. Other big mountains are Mount Grammos and Mount Vermion in Northern Greece and in the northwest is Mount Smolikas , Mount Tomaros and Tymphi which surrounds the beautiful city of Ioannina in Epirus.
In between these 2 worlds are the main cities which are surrounded by both sea and mountains. The main cities of Greece are Athens which is also the capital and Thesaloniki which is located in the northern part of Greece and is smaller and warmer city which you should definetelly visit. Main cities have more European characteristics while in the other areas you will see more traditional lifestyles where each location has a unique atmoshere and history. Although the last couple of years Athens has been advertised as not a safe place to visit due to the riots and economic crisis problems it is on the other hand the city with the biggest history that someone should visit. On the other hand Thesaloniki has always been the warmest of the two. People goes out more often and is more friendly in a way. Our suggestion is to visit both since you could definetelly go out and enjoy while at the same time visit local museums and monumments of the ancient history.
